What is a Dasha?
A Dasha is a planetary period in Jyotish — a named stretch of life, governed by one planet, that colours what you are living through and for how long. The Vimshottari Dasha system maps your whole life into a sequence of these periods, so you can see not just who you are but what time you are in.
The system that takes time seriously
Most self-knowledge frameworks describe a fixed personality. Jyotish is unusual because it is temporal: it holds that who you are in one period is not who you are in another, and that the chart knows which period is active right now. The Vimshottari Dasha is the main way it does this — a 120-year cycle divided among nine planets, each ruling a major period (Mahadasha) that lasts anywhere from six to twenty years.
Your sequence begins from the Moon's Nakshatra at birth, which is why an accurate birth moment matters. Within each Mahadasha sit sub-periods (Antardasha), and sub-sub-periods below those, so the system can describe not just the decade you are in but the particular season within it.
What a Dasha describes
A Dasha period is not a prediction of events. It is a description of the theme that is being activated — the dimension of your chart that is, for now, in the foreground. A Saturn period tends toward contraction, discipline, and a kind of karmic accounting; a Jupiter period toward expansion and meaning; a Venus period toward relationship and pleasure. The same person moves through all of these across a lifetime.
Understood this way, a difficult period reads differently. "You are in a Saturn Dasha — a time of pruning, not punishment" is orientation. It names the character of the season and reminds you that it has a known length and a known end.
Why the Dasha is the frame, not a footnote
In the aatm view the active Dasha and Antardasha are not a label tucked in a corner of the chart — they are the context around every insight. A reading that is not anchored in time can drift into generic personality description. A reading that is anchored tells you why this specific stretch of your life feels the way it does, and what it is asking of you.
How aatm approaches this
aatm calculates your Dasha timeline from precise planetary positions using the Lahiri ayanamsa and the canonical Vimshottari scheme, then keeps the period you are currently in present in every session. It orients rather than forecasts: it will tell you the character of the period you are in, never a claim about what will happen to you. The cosmos is not anxious, and the product is built not to be either.
aatm shows you the period you are living through and what it is asking of you — gently, and without fear.
