What is a Janam Kundli (birth chart)?

aatm · Aatm Labs editorial · Last updated 1 November 2026

A Janam Kundli is your birth chart in Jyotish — a map of where every planet sat in the sky at the exact moment and place you were born, drawn as the twelve houses of your life. It is the single document from which everything else in a reading is calculated.

A snapshot of the sky at your birth

The word Kundli means the diagram itself: a geometric snapshot of the heavens, fixed to your birth time and location. From it come the positions of the Sun, Moon, the five visible planets, and the lunar nodes (Rahu and Ketu), each placed in a sign and a house. Because it is tied to a precise moment, no two charts are identical — this is what makes Jyotish genuinely individual rather than a sorting of people into a handful of buckets.

The twelve houses

The chart is divided into twelve houses (bhavas), each covering an area of life — self and body, resources, communication, home, creativity, work and health, partnership, and so on. Where a planet falls, and which house it rules, shapes how that part of life tends to unfold. The houses are counted from your Lagna, the sign rising at birth, which is why an accurate birth time is so important: shift the Lagna and every house shifts with it.

Why birth time accuracy matters

Many people do not know their birth time precisely, and a one-hour error can move the Lagna into the next sign, rearranging the whole chart. Jyotish has honest ways to work with this — leading with the Moon's Nakshatra, which needs only a rough time, and rectifying the chart against known life events. A serious reading treats birth-data integrity as a foundation, not a formality.

The chart is the self; the Dasha is the path

The Kundli describes who you are. It becomes a living thing when paired with the Dasha timeline, which tells you which part of the chart is active now. Together they answer the two questions Jyotish was built for: who am I, and what time am I in.

How aatm approaches this

aatm builds your Kundli from precise astronomical computation using the Lahiri ayanamsa, then reads it against canonical texts rather than light prompting. Every insight is traceable to your specific configuration — if the chart cannot be specific, aatm says so rather than generalising. And it reads the chart to orient you, not to predict a fate.

aatm draws your Janam Kundli and reads it back to you in plain words, so the map of your own life finally becomes readable.
