What is a Lagna (ascendant)?
Your Lagna, or ascendant, is the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the exact moment you were born — the starting point from which your whole birth chart is read. It is also called the rising sign, and in Jyotish it anchors the twelve houses of life.
The rising sign at your birth
As the earth turns, a new sign appears over the eastern horizon roughly every two hours. The one rising at your birth moment becomes your Lagna. It sets the first house of your Janam Kundli, and every other house is counted from there. Because it changes relatively quickly, the Lagna depends sharply on an accurate birth time — the detail that most distinguishes your chart from someone born the same day.
Why the Lagna frames everything
If the Moon describes your inner weather, the Lagna describes the lens the whole chart is read through — your orientation to the world, your physical self, the house framework that organises every other placement. Two people can share many planetary positions, but a different Lagna gives those planets different houses to live in, and so a different life story. This is why Jyotish asks for your birth time, not just your birth date.
Lagna, Moon, and Sun
A thorough reading looks at three reference points: the Lagna (the rising sign and the structure of the chart), the Moon (the mind, read through its Nakshatra), and the Sun. Each tells a different layer of the same person. When birth time is uncertain, Jyotish can lead with the Moon — see Janma Nakshatra and your Moon sign — and confirm the Lagna later through rectification.
How aatm approaches this
aatm computes your Lagna from precise astronomical data using the Lahiri ayanamsa, and when your birth time is approximate it says so plainly rather than pretending to a certainty it does not have. It will even help you narrow the Lagna by mapping candidate charts against real events in your life. The goal is a chart you can trust — and then orientation within it, never a forecast.
aatm finds your Lagna and shows you the frame your whole chart is read through, in words that make sense.
