The Vimshottari Mahadashas
The nine Vimshottari Mahadashas are the major planetary periods of Jyotish — a 120-year cycle that tells you not just who you are, but what time of life you are in.
Each Mahadasha is ruled by one planet and lasts a fixed number of years; together Ketu (7), Venus (20), Sun (6), Moon (10), Mars (7), Rahu (18), Jupiter (16), Saturn (19), and Mercury (17) sum to 120. Start with what a dasha is, or read any period below. Each is described as orientation — a character and what it asks of you — never a forecast.
- Ketu Mahadasha
7 years — detachment and dissolving, the pull toward what cannot be grasped.
- Venus Mahadasha
20 years — relationship, beauty, pleasure, and the things that make a life worth living.
- Sun Mahadasha
6 years — self, authority, and the slow work of standing in your own light.
- Moon Mahadasha
10 years — mind, mood, care, and the inner weather of a life.
- Mars Mahadasha
7 years — drive, courage, and the honest use of your own force.
- Rahu Mahadasha
18 years — hunger, ambition, and the pull toward unfamiliar territory.
- Jupiter Mahadasha
16 years — meaning, growth, wisdom, and the expansion of a life.
- Saturn Mahadasha
19 years — discipline, patience, and pruning that is not punishment.
- Mercury Mahadasha
17 years — intellect, communication, and the exchange of ideas.
